My name is Julia Song, and I am an 18-year-old filmmaker, current senior at Marlborough School, and an alumna from Ghetto Film School's GFSLA Fellows Program . I will be attending NYU Tisch for film & TV production in the fall. Additionally, I have twelve years of experience in club swim and eleven years of piano experience. At Marlborough, I am a member of the Head of School's List and Honor Roll, Junior Varsity swim team, and Varsity water polo team. Additionally, I am the co-captain of the varsity and JV swim team, director and production head of VTV (student-run television program), editor of yearbook, and editor-in-chief of The Edge (student-run literary/arts publication). I am also a member of the California Scholarship Federation and the National Society of High School Scholars.
With my academically rigorous education from Marlborough, my experience in collaboration from my background in athletics, and my intensive creative training and education from GFS, I look forward to utilizing both my creative and technical skills on future projects, and hope to make an impact as a storyteller in today's industry.
I am a graduated Fellow of Ghetto Film School, which has given me experience in collaborating with creators and industry professionals, such Adam Pertofsky from Rock Paper Scissors for post production work, as well as television promo work with Fox for their show Star.
After experience in writing, directing, editing, animating, and producing; I (at age 15) traveled to Tel Aviv, Israel during the summer of 2017 to work as assistant director of Ghetto Film School's annual international thesis film, Charley Horse. Because of this incredible opportunity, I now have experience managing a twenty-five piece crew (both American and Israeli) and have a comprehensive understanding of pre-production, production, and post production, as I saw the film through its offline and online editing stages.
In the same summer of 2017 before Israel, my fellow GFSLA classmates and I spent two and a half weeks at New York University to take lessons from various professors- most often, Rick Litvin and Dean Sheril Antonio. At the end of our residency, we each left Weinstein Hall with short films and newfound understandings of our place in the world as young, diverse story tellers.
Since then, I continue to use the connections I made through GFS along with my skills to create films and tell stories.
I have been actively participating in graphic design and publishing since 2016 when I, at age 14, was asked to create Braddock Drive Gifted Magnet's yearbook. I created the school's 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 yearbooks on Adobe InDesign without the help of a staff. The experience of creating full yearbooks on my own adequately prepared me for my first year of being a staff member of Marlborough's yearbook, where I have obtained experience in publishing as we are in close communication with our manufacturer, Josten's.
In addition to film, I enjoy photography and have an in-depth understanding in both film and digital photography (although I particularly take interest in film!), after having studied it for five years. I continue my study and training in photography in GFS, where we are currently focusing on visual composition, and in Marlborough School's Senior Thesis Photography course, which places an emphasis on building an advanced portfolio and preparing work suitable for exhibition.
